Embracing new adventures: my second month in Valencia

It’s been almost two months since I first arrived in Valencia, and as I settle into my volunteering project at the Natural Science Museum, the city continues to surprise me in the best ways. This second month has been filled with new experiences, challenges, and a growing appreciation for this vibrant place that I now call home.

Although the Natural Science Museum is currently closed for renovations, this has turned out to be an incredible opportunity for me to dive deep into the behind-the-scenes processes of running a museum. Instead of engaging directly with visitors, I’m getting hands-on experience with the museum’s transformation. I’ve been helping with the reorganization of exhibits, assisting in planning the new museum website, and collaborating with the team to reimagine the visitor experience.

This month was also marked by Las Fallas, the vibrant and unique festival that fills the streets of Valencia with enormous sculptures, fireworks, and celebrations. I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the city’s culture. The energy and creativity of the festival were contagious, and being part of the celebrations was an unforgettable (and noisy) experience.

I also had the chance to join an online training session with other volunteers from across Spain. It was inspiring to connect with people working on different projects in cities all over the country. We shared our experiences, challenges, and ideas for how we can make a real impact in our communities.

What has truly made this experience even more special is sharing it with the other amazing girls I live with. Our shared experiences, from eating together to exploring the city, have brought us closer, and I’m incredibly grateful to have such supportive and like-minded people around me. Living together has created a strong bond between us, and I’m constantly inspired by their stories and perspectives. It feels like we’re all growing together, and this connection has made my time here even more meaningful.

Valencia has continued to impress me, both in terms of its culture and its beauty. The city is full of stunning spots to explore, from the charming old town to the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences and, of course, the food – I can’t get enough of the local dishes. From delicious paella to the refreshing horchata, the culinary culture here is a true delight.

Reflecting on these two months, I realize how much I’ve grown, both professionally and personally. While the renovations at the museum mean that I’ve had to adapt to a different kind of experience, I’m grateful for the chance to learn and be part of such an exciting project. Valencia has already started to feel like home, and I’m looking forward to the months ahead and all the new adventures they’ll bring!
