May in Valencia: books, beaches and unexpected passions

As spring settled in Valencia, May brought with it a mix of lively cultural events, relaxing weekends, and meaningful discoveries. Although the Natural Science Museum remains closed for renovations, it continues to evolve behind the scenes — and being part of this transformation makes each day at work feel purposeful and full of potential.

One of the highlights of the month was the Feria del Libro, which brought a fresh wave of life to the Jardines de Viveros. The park filled with people, stories, and the scent of books — turning the green space into a celebration of literature and community. Walking through the fair, I felt a deep connection with the city and its love for culture.

May weekends were marked by beautiful moments of exploration and joy. Together with other volunteers, I spent a relaxing weekend in Moraira, a charming coastal town known for its clear waters and peaceful atmosphere. It was the perfect getaway to unwind, bond with the group, and enjoy the sea.

A special moment this month was watching the Eurovision Song Contest grand finale. I’ve always followed Eurovision, but this time felt even more special as I shared it with the other volunteers. We sang, danced, and celebrated each performance together — and it was lovely to see how contagious the Eurovision spirit can be!

Cultural adventures continued on Sundays, when we visited some of Valencia’s museums, including the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània (CCCC). There, we stumbled upon a free flamenco performance, an emotional and powerful experience that left a lasting impression on all of us. It’s amazing how spontaneous moments like these can be so impactful.

Throughout all these experiences, I continue to support the museum team with various tasks, learning more each day about the world of cultural institutions and the work that happens behind the scenes. The museum may be closed to the public, but the energy within is vibrant and full of purpose.

Valencia, once again, has offered a month rich in creativity, connection, and discovery. I can’t wait to see what June will bring in this unforgettable chapter of my European Solidarity Corps journey.
