The Un-Vacation: My August of Work and Friends
My August was, for the most part, a quiet affair. I didn’t travel or have a big break, but it was still a great month full of small moments. It began with a goodbye, as my roommate, Alma, returned to Sweden. Her volunteer work here was finished, and she had a new chapter to start back home. The apartment felt a little too quiet for a few days after she left, but it was nice to have some time to myself.
My work schedule was a mix of the familiar and the new, all in the mornings. I spent most of my mornings at the Ayuntamiento, continuing with my regular tasks. For the last two weeks of August, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, however, I was at the Natural Science Museum filling in for Aitana, who was on vacation. My job was to help visitors with the new virtual reality headsets. The museum had just launched a new path, and a lot of people were curious about it. It was fun to see their faces light up as they put the headsets on and got to experience the museum in a new way. I’m not a tech expert, but I quickly got the hang of it, and it was a nice change of pace.
I didn’t take a vacation this month because some friends came to visit. I was so happy to show them around. We went to my favorite spots and tried some new restaurants I’d been wanting to go to. I really enjoyed getting to see the city through their eyes. We spent a lot of time just walking around, soaking in the late summer evenings. The weather was perfect, and the city felt alive. They loved it here, and it was a lot of fun to watch them fall in love with the city’s charm.
Toward the end of the month, my supervisor returned from his holiday, and I started a new project. The city is developing a new mobile application for their museums, and my job is to gather and enrich the practical information that will be provided on the app. This includes details like opening hours, directions, accessibility, and other useful tips for visitors. It’s a challenging but rewarding mission, and I’m excited to see how the app turns out.
As August draws to a close, I’m already looking forward to my September plans. My own vacation is finally here, and I’ll be going to Denmark at the beginning of the month. I’m really looking forward to a change of scenery and some time to relax. I also have a day trip to Madrid planned for later in the month. The goal is to spend the day hopping between museums, getting my fill of art and history. It’s a month that will be all about travel and new discoveries, and I can’t wait.
